How Hungry is YOUR Caterpillar?

This week we have been studying Eric Carle in our classroom. We're growing our very own butterflies so it seemed the perfect time to pull out The Very Hungry Caterpillar, as well as some of Carle's other amazing critter books. We studied how Eric Carle makes his illustrations - by first painting an entire page, adding some texture and then later collaging. The kids had the BEST time making their caterpillars and I must admit - they turned out pretty darn cute.

Our wall of fame.

Painting our paper.

Adding texture with sponges, bubble wrap and even a bouncy ball!

If this caterpillar eats as much as my kids, he'll be a butterfly in no time!

In other news, we got out of our lease at our current house early so we have to rock and roll with packing and moving. We close on the townhouse June 22nd (EEP!) and need to be out of here by the 30th. If anyone feels a strong desire to help paint or move let us know!!

  1. This is such a cute idea! So, once they painted the whole paper green, did the cut out the circles from that paper or am I misunderstanding a step? This is a really cute project! I found out I'm going to teach K/1 at Stone Robinson and this looks like fun project I'd like to try!

  2. Michelle you are so sweet. I LOVED this project, it was definitely one of my favorites. They used all kinds of "supplies" to paint the paper green and yellow. And then we let it dry and gave them a stencil to trace the circles (reminding them to do it on the back so that the pencil lines wouldn't show). For the kids who have a harder time with fine motor, you could always use a yogurt container to help them trace. They cut out the circles (hence why some of them are so hysterical looking). They could cut as many as they wanted and arrange them as they saw fit - as long as the circles touched. We had a lot of choppy caterpillars at first! Are you excited for K/1??? I applied for that job LAST year. Let me know if you need/want to collaborate on stuff - I love sharing and getting new ideas!! (CONGRATS on the jobs - both you and Ryan)
